Optimum Video Encoding Settings for N95 8GB

Nokia N95 8GB (Multimedia Menu)

My Nokia N95 8GB came preloaded with the Spiderman 3 full length film preinstalled. The quality of it is amazing and on the 2.8″ screen is is a pleasure to watch!

I wanted to get this quality with other videos I may want to put on the device in the future and looked high and low for programs and settings that would get me the best overall results. I was surprised at the range of different settings people were recommending – some of which wern’t very good at all.

In the end I found the perfect settings for optimum picture and sound on my N95 8GB, so I will share them with you guys!

Read on for more!

The program I recommend you use to encode your videos is erightsoft’s SUPER (C) Video Converter http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html. SUPER is a free universal player/encoder so you do not have to pay a penny to use this software!

Once you have this installed on your computer, you are ready to roll! I think how to set the program up is pretty self-explanatory, but if you need any further help, leave a message in the comments section and i’ll try my best to help you!

There are two types of settings you can use. One if you only want to intend watching the videos on your device (reduces file size as well), or one which looks great on your device and via TV-Out.

‘I want it looking great on my device’

Ok! Here are the settings to use:

  • Set the ‘Output Container’ to MP4
  • Set the ‘Output Video Codec’ to H.264/AVC
  • Set the ‘Output Audio Codec’ to AAC
  • Set the ‘Video Scale Size’ to 320:240 and the aspect ratio to 4:3
  • Set the ‘Frame/Sec’ to 25 and the bitrate to 384kbps
  • Set the ‘Sampling Frequency’ to 44100, then click on 2 channels
  • Set the ‘Bitrate’ to 128kbps

I recommend you tick the ‘Use DirectShow’ box on the top right (my computer failed to encode without this option ticked) and then drag the file you want to encode into the box at the bottom.

Finally, press ‘Encode (Active Job List Files) and wait for the program to finish. Once it has finished and you have located where the new file has been saved all that remains is to transfer to your phone and enjoy!

‘I want it looking great on my device, and through TV-Out’

You’re not asking for much are you! ;) Here are the settings to use:

  • Set the ‘Output Container’ to MP4
  • Set the ‘Output Video Codec’ to MPEG-4
  • Set the ‘Output Audio Codec’ to AAC
  • Set the ‘Video Scale Size’ to 640:480 and the aspect ratio to 4:3
  • Set the ‘Frame/Sec’ to 25 and the bitrate to 432kbps
  • Set the ‘Sampling Frequency’ to 44100, then click on 2 channels
  • Set the ‘Bitrate’ to 128kbps

I recommend you tick the ‘Use DirectShow’ box on the top right again, and then drag the file you want to encode into the box at the bottom.

Press ‘Encode (Active Job List Files) and wait for the program to finish. Once it has finished and you have located where the new file has been saved, transfer it to your phone!

I hope this little guide has helped you out!

  1. These instructions proved very helpful, what superlative would you use for something that is “SUPER”? It’s awesome! Thank you so much.

  2. Hi!
Thanks for your comment, i’m glad they helped you out!

  3. Help please,

What files can you drag into the box? Do they have to be mp4? First I tried vob’s but it won’t work…

  4. That is strange… the site says that it supports vob file format. Has anyone else had this issue??? It isn’t just MP4 formats that can be dragged in the box for definate!!!
Sorry I can’t be any more help!!!

  5. Hi, sorry to disagree, but mpeg4 at 432 kbps will NOT give good quality at VGA on tv-out. The phone records video in the same format at around 2700 kbps, you will never get that kind of quality at that low bitrate that you recommend. Even h264 at 432 will not get you good quality using tv-out, and it is a much better codec than “normal” mpeg4. The bitrate you recommend might be good at QVGA to view on the phone, but it will suck when using tv-out. Regards.

  6. Good stuff is also Xilisoft HD Video Converter, but it’s not for free…

  7. Hi, Try using this setting:

    Video:

    Bitrate : 2150 kbps
    Codec: H.264/AVC
    Size: 320*240
    Container: MP4

    Audio:

    Sampling Rate: 48000 kz
    Bitrate: 160Kbps
    Codec: aac

To know which Software does this job perfectly mail me @ jagan.desh@gmail.com

  8. using the “look good on phone” settings it gets to the end and brings up a directshow enabled error” on super.

    Any ideas?

  9. avc won’t play with Smartmovie or divx player but will play well with real player..

mp4v codec plays well on both smartmovie and real player..

how to use super and convert files into mp4v ?

    thx :)
