Nokia Mini Speakers MD-4

The Nokia N78 I received a few weeks ago came packaged with these MD-4 speakers – so naturally we put them to the test!!!

The speakers themselves are small and compact thanks to its V-shaped design and could easily be put into your pocket when on the move. They are compatible with any device that has a 3.5mm audio jack as well as others (by using adaptors (included in the package) so you are not restricted to a particular model/brand.

Read on for my thoughts and photos!!!

First of all, the unboxing!!! In the box you can expect to find the speakers themselves, a set of instructions, 4 AA batteries to provide 30 hours of music playback (these speakers do not have a built-in rechargeable battery), a handy carry pouch, an AD-15 Audio Adaptor to make older devices with a Pop Port compatible with the speakers, and an AD-50 universal headphone adaptor (so you can connect the speakers to devices such as the recently announced E71) with a 2.5mm audio jack.

I was really impressed at how compatible these speakers were –  if your device doesn’t have a 3.5mm audio jack, there were other means of connecting the speakers to compatible devices included in the box. It was nice to see that you didn’t have to pay extra for the adaptors you may need. I was fine with the 3.5mm connection on the speakers themselves with what I used with them, but the options are there which is great.

The speakers have a folding V-shaped design which helps make them more compact when travelling. The hinge felt strong and sturdy and could withstand general wear and tear relatively easily. They are finished in an attractive glossy black which would compliment devices like the N81, N78 and N96 really well, but they would also look great with others as well!

In the package, you are provided with 4 AA batteries. 2 AA batteries are inserted in the back of each set of speakers. The back of each half slides off to reveal the battery compartments, and the covers slide back into place with a satisfying click and don’t move/wobble at all. All in all I was really satisfied with the build quality of this accessory.

The speakers also have a slide switch on the top of the right speaker. This can be used if you need to quickly mute the music/turn off the speakers. When you switch the speakers back on, the music will fade back in to the volume you had set so you are not startled by what could be very loud music when you switch them back on! The volume itself is controlled by the device you are using.

The speakers have been really well thought out – if you close the speakers up by folding them in, they will shut off! There is a small indentation on the left speaker so that as you close them, it slides the switch into the off position and saves battery. When the speakers are switched on, you are indicated by a green light which is bright and easily visible.

THe MD-4 speakers also have a built-in FM radio antenna so when you connect the speakers to a compatible Nokia device, you can also listen to the radio.

The quality of the music through them were just like the accessory itself – fantastic. Music came through very crisp and clear and could be turned up to very high volumes with no signs of crackle or hiss. I was really surprised at how such quality could come from a relatively small device!

I also gave the MD-4 speakers to my dad who wanted to watch a recorded TV drama from a PVR, but the speakers built-in were far to quiet for him to hear clearly everything that was going on. He was really impressed at the sound quality that came through, and the volumes the device were able to cope with!

Would I buy the MD-4 speakers – definately! I would recommend these speakers to anyone! In my opinion, you can’t go wrong!!! The build quality is great – the sound quality is superb and they are extermely portable if you want to take a set of speakers with you.

You can get them for £17.99 currently on Play.com (the links below) which is a great deal for the piece of kit you are getting!

  1. I managed to pickup 3 of these great little speakers up in Tesco for £4.97 each last month http://nokiaaddict.com/2008/06/02/nokia-mini-speakers-md-4-497-tesco/

Used them constantly on holiday connected to my iPod and also use while away working during the week connected to my N95-2 for music and my laptop for added volume while watching movies.

The sound out them is great and the accessories which come with them are very good as well. I used the neat Nokia bag on holiday to protect my N95-2 from the elements.

I’d def recommend them to anyone.

  2. You had a good deal there! I havn’t found them anywhere near as low as £4.97!!!
